Sixty years! Thank you very much. And never in my wildest dreams na ako po ay magiging isang pulitiko. Never in my wildest dreams na ako po ang magiging isang mayor, governor, at congresswoman, but I guess it was meant to be. - Vilma Santos-Recto, reported by Jojo Gabinete, PEP, 27 Dec 2022
Vi on her 60 Decades in Showbiz - "...The mere fact that I lasted for 60 years in the business is a big highlight for me as an artist. It’s no joke to be able to last 60 years, especially because at this point in time, so many want to become an artista. At the end of the day, ang lagi din natin babantayan, dapat alagaan at trabahuin, yung tinatawag na longevity, tatagal ba at hanggang kelan?...You can be superstar overnight but ang usapan ay longevity. And I thank God for all the blessings, I thank all my friends in showbiz, my Vilmanians (Sixty years) is a blessing as it is...Definitely, the first movie I did, Trudis Liit, when I was nine years old. Imagine! ‘Di ko alam paano ako nakakaiyak, how I was able to deliver a dialogue, I don’t know. It was very memorable for me...I did so many films about women. And for that, I’m very, very proud because I was able to do relevant films, especially about women, such as Sister Stella L., Bata, Bata Paano Ka Ginawa?, Ipagpatawad Mo about autism, Dolzura Cortez, a true story about AIDs, those kinds of films. I was able to be given the chance to stand for the rights of women, which I guess ‘pag na-interview ako sa school or sa mga students, parang I think kahit papaano nagkaroon ng tatak yun. Yung pagiging feminist, at the same time, I became a public servant, mas lalong tumama. Napakita ko yung karapatan ng kababaihan through my films. After that, I became a public servant and during that time I did Anak, a film about OFWs. So, I’m very lucky to be able to do those kinds of films...I’m very thankful that I experienced all that in my 60 years in the business...What I know is that bata pa ako ini-enjoy ko na talaga ang showbiz. Secondly, maybe I was given the chance to learn to act by being directed by great directors, many of whom had passed away. I was also blessed and lucky to be given the chance to do relevant films because not everyone gets the opportunity...And baka kasi mahal ko rin ang mga taong nagmamahal sa akin, if we talk about the Vilmanians or people supporting me, in everything that I do, priority sila sa iniisip ko. Magustuhan kaya nila eto? May matutunan kaya sila dito? I just want to make them happy. And if you’re earning something, maybe if you can share na may matutuwa, baka kahit papaano nakakatulong yun. You show care, love… - Vilma Santos Recto, reported by Nathalie Tomada, The Philippine Star, 04 December 2022
First Quarter of 2023 - "...I texted her to say, ‘I know you’re into vlogging now but we miss seeing you in the movies. I hope you’re coming back soon. You might want to do a movie with us. We already have the stories for you.’ She immediately replied with, ‘Let’s sit down and meet. I’m excited to go back to movie-making.’ It took another month to find the right schedule for all of us...which could either be a series or just a movie...while the other is a “super genre movie, where Vilma will play a gun-toting character...She just wanted to do the gun-toting project first...Vilma then asked for the timetable and we said, ‘We kind of work slow. We take our time. We hope to do this next year.’ She then said her thanks but added that ‘I still want to enjoy vlogging, so next year would be fine..." - Director Erik Matti, Reported by Marinel Cruz, Philippine Daily Inquirer, 21 October 2022
SSL @ MoMA, Nov 20, 4PM and Nov 23, 6:30PM - (Sister Stella L. 1984. Philippines. Screenplay by Jose F. Lacaba, Jose Almojuelam, De Leon. With Vilma Santos, Jay Ilagan, Laurice Guillen. DCP. Courtesy Mike De Leon, Lily Monteverde, Regal Films. In Filpino; English subtitles. 103 min.) - "MoMA presents a work in progress of the ongoing restoration of Sister Stella L. Jose “Pete” Lacaba, the author of some of Lino Brocka’s best films, including Jaguar (1979), was jailed and tortured by the Marcos regime, a harrowing experience that drives this urgent tale of a nun’s awakening to political corruption and worker exploitation. A commercial failure, Sister Stella L. was nonetheless a sincere attempt at political cinema, made in the tumultuous and violent year leading to the overthrow of Marcos; in retrospect, De Leon observes, “The social order hardly changed after the revolt. All we did was get rid of a dictator and his family, and we didn’t even do it properly. The Marcoses should have stood trial and been thrown into jail. This didn’t happen because the revolt turned into a religious fiesta and was hailed as a peaceful revolution—the ultimate oxymoron.”- MoMA
And I’m looking forward for our third. Dahil siyempre, ibang usapan na ngayon, being a grand lola na, ayan. Ahh, yun po, napaka-memorable din po yun sa akin..." - Gladys Reyes, Bandera, 25 September 2022
Dekada ’70 (Ang Orihinal at Kumpletong Edisyon) by Lualhati Bautista - "Which was better, the movie or the book? This is an age-old question that has sparked many a heated debate. Adapting books into movies is an art form in itself. Sometimes the movies do get it right, capturing the essence of the books through a visual medium, showing us scenes that we could only dream about. But let’s not forget that the source materials of these movies still have much to offer that simply cannot be put into the film. Whether it was to cut the movie short, or due to artistic decisions from the filmmakers, the movies can never truly be exactly like the books. So, if you enjoyed watching these movies, then why not check out the inspiration behind them? You might come out appreciating one or the other a bit more...Dekada ’70 (Ang Orihinal at Kumpletong Edisyon) by Lualhati Bautista, Who can ever forget the powerful story of the Bartolome family as seen through the eyes of matriarch Amanda Bartolome? A story that continues to be highly relevant and important to this day. Played by the extraordinary Vilma Santos, this film is socially and politically charged. Reading the original text brings you deeper into the mind of Amanda as she reflects on her duties as a mother, a wife, a woman, and a Filipina. The novel also brings readers deep into the caring hands of Lualhati Bautista as she writes Amanda Bartolome as if she was your friend telling you about her life. The word choice and storytelling keep things casual despite the increasing turmoil occurring inside Amanda’s head and on the streets of the Philippines...While it is great seeing words come to life and comparing our imagination to the filmmaker’s choices, there are some things that only a (good) book can do. Get to the source of your favorite films and learn more than what the film was able to offer. Who did it better, the movie or the book? Maybe appreciating both separately will help you appreciate both together as they contribute to the story as a whole. Happy reading and happy watching!" - Gari Custodio, Inquirer, 30 August 2022
Beautiful Girl - "...At 77, Jose Mari, who will receive FASO’s Excellence in Music Award for his long career and accomplishments as a singer-songwriter, is as sharp, engaging, and personable as ever. He was at home in the Philippines when I interviewed him via Zoom but he is scheduled to fly soon to LA. “I’m looking forward to listening to FASO’s interpretation of my music because each arranger has a vision of my songs,” Jose Mari enthused, flashing his well-known genial smile. “And sometimes it’s a slightly different take”...I then asked Jose Mari to say what came to his mind – just something short – when I rattled off some of his most popular songs on Spotify...The man, whose family was and is in the sugar business, was impressively quick and eloquent about each composition that I randomly picked. What surprised me was how some of his hits have political and patriotic underpinnings. Beautiful Girl, “I remember Vilma Santos and Gretchen Barreto. People thought that I wrote the song for several other actresses. So even my wife was beginning to be suspicious: ‘Did you really write the song for them?" - Ruben V. Nepales, Rappler, 10 Aug 2022
Lola for All Seasons - "..."Maiiba ang buhay nila, e. Kasi you wouldn't know as a mom, kahit ano ang sabihin mo, ‘Naku, alam mo 'pag naging nanay ka na ganito mangyayari sa iyo…’ You wouldn't know until ikaw mismo makakita na mayroong buhay na nanggaling sa iyo, na dun mo lang mare-realize na kaya mong ipagpalit ang buhay mo para sa mga anak mo...Definitely 'pag lumabas na si Peanut, maiiba more or less next step ang status ng buhay nila as family. Kahit papaano may mga priorities sila na maiiba, and I told them to prepare for that, Iba na pag nandiyan na ang baby kaya kailangan it's more understanding. Ang thinking nila it's more of -- ikaw, ako, hindi na. Family na ang tingin mo dito. It's not only you’re my wife, you’re my husband; you're a mom, and you're a dad, you're a father...Kung nai-spoil mo ang anak mo, mas mai-spoil mo raw ang apo. I wouldn't know. But the thing is, kung nakikita ko ang sarili ko kung paano ako mag-alaga sa pamangkin ko o sa anak ng iba, hindi ko ma-imagine pag apo ko na. Baka ayokong madapa. Hindi naman ayaw padapuan ng lamok, sabi nila...I wouldn't know until nandiyan siya. Pero sabi nila, ganun daw. Hindi ko alam. Basta excited ako pag nandiyan na siya. Hindi ko alam kung i-spoil-in ko or bawal ma-spoil 'yung bata. I have no idea until I see my apo..." - Vilma Santos-Recto, ABS-CBN News, 23 Aug 2022
Cherie Gil and Vilma Santos – "Mother and Daughter, Rosemarie and Cherie Gil both won a best supporting actress awards in a Vilma Santos films. Rosemarie was recognized in her heartfelt performance in Celso Ad Castillo’s “Burlesk Queen,” a best picture winner in 1977 Metro Manila Film Festival. Meanwhile, Cherie, won her best supporting actress via Eddie Garcia’s 1989 Metro Manila Film Festival best picture winner, “Imortal.” Both Imortal and Burlesk also won best actress awards for Vilma Santos. Vilma and Cherie did three films together before reuniting again in this year indie film, “Ekstra: The Bit Player.” Some highlights, both Cherie and Vi are regular staple in National Artist Ishmael Bernal’s filmography. Cherie’s most memorable Bernal film was “City After Dark” where she portrayed a lesbian drug pusher who’s in love with blind masseuse, Rio Locsin. Vi’s most recognizable Bernal film was “The Affair” or locally titled “Relasyon” where she played a sympathetic mistress of a chauvinistic teacher, Christopher de Leon. While Vi started her career as a child star, her relaunch into a mature actress was via Celso Ad Castillo’s “Burlesk Queen,” a period movie filled with sexual innuendo while Cherie Gil’s launching movie was Elwood Perez’s “Problem Child,” a modern movie filled with blatant sexual scenarios. Cherie’s other notable films were: Oro Plata Mata; Taga sa Panahon; Ito Ba Ang Ating Mga Anak; and Rosenda. Although Gil is no longer commands leading role status in films she ventured successfully into television and in recent years in stage acting, more notably in “The Graduate” and “Master Class.” Like Vi’s most memorable movie line: “Para kang karinderyang bukas sa lahat Kumain! (“You’re like a 24 hour take out restaurant, open whoever wants to eat!”), Cherie has her share of most memorable movie lines. Confronting the uprising singer in the movie “Bituing Walang Ningning,” Cherie uttered the lines to an equally combative Sharon Cuneta: “You’re nothing but a second rate, trying hard, copy cat!” Cherie is indeed someone to be cherish." - Rendt Viray
Darna in Martial law years - "...The '70s witnessed the greatest number of Darna iterations and perhaps the most well-known Darna portrayal ever. Vilma Santos donned the costume four times in “Lipad, Darna, Lipad!” (1973), “Darna and the Giants” (1974), “Darna vs. The Planet Women” (1975), and “Darna and Ding” (1980). Two more Darna films released in this era: “Bira, Darna, Bira!” (1979) starring an 18-year-old Rio Locsin and “Darna Kuno?” (1979), a parody film starring Dolphy as Darna alongside Brenda del Rio and Lotis Key. The first Darna television series premiered on KBS 9 in 1977, with 14-year-old Lorna Tolentino in the lead role. In her study “Darna Movies in the Time of Martial Law: National Trauma and Historical Memory,” Cherish Aileen A. Brillon expounded on how the Vilma Santos “Darna” films can be evaluated through the larger historical experience. She notes how “Giants’” villain, X3X, conveys the “violence, fear, and the resulting trauma from living in an authoritarian society.” Similarly, “Planets” shows “the role of an authoritarian state in controlling memory and disciplining women’s labor and reproductive capacity.” In the thick of it all is Darna, a female fighter who personified the collective struggle for freedom from fascist rule during a period of unrest in which nationalist movements saw an uptick in women's involvement..." - Ryan Oquiza, CNN Life, 21 Jul 2022
Huwag Malungkot - "Hi Julie. Thank you for reaching out. Huwag na kayo maging malungkot. Naniniwala ako na sa mundong ito, if anything is meant to happen, it will find its way. And yes, there is always a time for everything. I sincerely congratulate all of them. Mabuhay kayo mga Vilmanians!" - Vilma Santos-Recto, Reported by Robert Requintina, Manila Bulletin
Successful "Vi and Bot" - "While other countries probably don’t have them, love teams have been a huge and important part of Philippine entertainment ever since it began decades ago. And through the years, different tandems were born and went on to conquer our hearts until their team-ups were put to an end due to various reasons. However, that’s not always the case since some of the on-screen pairs we admired continued their romantic ties behind-the-scenes as they turned out to become real-life couples that we keep on avidly stanning...In this Kapamilya gallery, let’s get to know some of the most successful tandems on local television history that we fervently supported and loved and that made us genuinely feel kilig through the years!...Vilma Santos and Edgar Mortiz...Established to become the rival of the influential “Guy and Pip” tandem, the “Vi and Bot” team-up of Vilma Santos and Edgar Mortiz went on to become successful as well as they starred in a slew of blockbuster films ever since they were launched in the 1970 flick “Young Love” and recorded several songs together...They also became a couple for a while, with the Star For All Seasons regarding him as her first love and boyfriend, who she recalled in an interview in Magandang Buhay as super protective of her. They may not have ended up together as both of them have been happily married to their respective spouses, but Direk Bobot and Batangas Governor Vilma have remained close friends up to the present..." - ABS-CBN Entertainment
Malalaman natin iyan in a few days...” - Vilma Santos-Recto, reported by Ed de Leon, Pang-masa, 05 June 2022
- Honourable Congresswoman Vilma Santos-Recto, Representative of 6th District, Lipa City Batangas Philippines, reported by Ed de Leon, Pang-masa, 07 May 2022
Lamangan's Project for Vi - "...Producer John Bryan Diamante also told ABS-CBN News that 3:16 Media Network is also preparing the comeback movie of Santos under their helm. “Nag-usap na kami ni direk Joel Lamangan about the project," Diamante said. "I share the excitement of movie fans looking forward to see the Star of all Seasons acting again. I hope that this can also revive the film industry now that the pandemic is easing up." In a separate interview Tuesday, Lamangan confirmed with ABS-CBN News that he is pitching a timely story for Santos, based on a local novel. The concept is still top secret but given Lamangan’s vision about the adventures of a mature woman, it will totally floor Santos and her Vilmanians..." - Mario Dumaual, ABS-CBN News, 12 Apr 2022
Emotional Baggage - "...’Sa Bisperas’ deals with more existential issues, like the end of life, or the question of an afterlife, as well as a real haunting. It is ‘Itim’ for those in the twilight of their years, like me. it has two major leads, a father and a son, a favorite theme of mine and their dysfunctional, sometimes loving relationship. I am very happy that Teroy Guzman is still with me, and Max Collins, I offered the other major role of the son to John Lloyd Cruz. He seemed interested at first but after a couple of emails, I never heard from him again. So I guess he's not. Besides, I’m not looking for stars, not anymore, even if they're good actors, which I’m told he is. But I must confess that I’ve never seen any of his films. Showbiz stars, except Vilma Santos, have a lot of emotional baggage and that is difficult to bear. Also, in case I get to inject politics into this film, actors may get flak from their network bosses. I am only focused on pure cinema. My new and perhaps last film will be a chamber supernatural drama with the best actors I can find. of course, it will be filmed in Baguio. Where else?...It (Sister Stella L) has remained unrestored but don’t get me started on that...(With “Sa Bisperas” next in line, De Leon is again on a roll.) I will keep on doing creative work, till I croak..." - Director Mike de Leon, reported by Totel V. de Jesus, ABS-CBN News, 08 Apr 2022
“Ang layo-layo na ng narating mo mula nung ‘In My Life’ days natin sa New York. You are blessed with fantastic wit and humor. Despite your successes, always keep your feet on the ground,” saad ni Santos sa video clip..." - Karl Cedrick Basco, ABS-CBN News, 02 Apr 2022
- Honourable Congresswoman Vilma Santos-Recto, Representative of 6th District, Lipa City Batangas Philippines, Reported by Ed de Leon, Pang-masa, 25 March 2022
Imortal Vi - "Veteran actress Susan Roces expressed gratitude Friday to the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) for honoring her with its latest commemorative stamps alongside Gloria Romero, Nora Aunor, Vilma Santos and six other achievers in showbiz, sports, the arts, and other fields...Santos also told ABS-CBN News she was deeply moved by the PHLPost honor. The multi-awarded actress also said the honor is a morale booster at a time when she took a respite from running in the elections...The issuance of the Living Legends commemorative stamps is in line with the 75th Anniversary of the first issuance of stamps by the Republic of the Philippines. PHLPost said these represent the best in their generations and extol their lifetime values of hard work, patience, perseverance and passion." - Mario Dumaual, ABS-CBN News, 25 February 2022
YT versus TV - "...One advantage of YouTube over TV is that it makes video-sharing so easy. No piracy issues. But I do not think traditional TV will ever lose its luster. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, the programming of TV networks sometimes gets interrupted. However, I am optimistic that science will continue to help us get back to what we used to do, with less fear and better defense..." - Honourable Congresswoman Vilma Santos-Recto, Representative of 6th District, Lipa City Batangas Philippines, Reported by Dolly Anne Carvajal, Philippine Daily Inquirer, 08 January 2022
