Kuya Mario's Prerogative

Isang babaeng nakasakay namin sa dyip ang nakakilala sa amin at nagsabi: "O, ngayong tapos na ang Star Awards, siguro, isusulat mo na kung sino ang binoto mong best actress. Sinabi mo 'yan sa column mo." O, siya, Gigi (sorry, I forgot your last name), heto na 'yon. Personally, we voted for Vilma Santos (na siya ring nagwagi sa "Movie Magazine" and we have a feeling, siya ring magwawagi sa darating na Urian Awards on March 31). Magaling si Nora Aunor sa "Bilangin" and we believe na ang hindi niya pagkakanominate man lang sa Catholic Awards is a big oversight on their part. Sa gagawin naming paliwanag for our choice, we don't expect na maimpluwensiyahan ang diehard Nora fans dahil kapag fan mentality ang pinairal, no amount of rational explanation will do to change their opinion.


Pero kami, napatunayan na naming wala kaming ganyang kaisipan noong maging nominado si Vi for "Tagos ng Dugo" and we cited our reasons why we favor Lorna Tolentino in "Maging Akin Ka Lamang" over her. To the untained eye, very impressive si Guy sa "Bilangin" dahil ang performance niya is mainly a series of big highly emotional scenes that call for confrontations with Tirso Cruz III, Gloria Romero, Miguel Rodriguez and Ana Margarita. This is the kind of acting that call for grand, tour-de-force manner of emoting, with glaring eyes, flaring nostrils, quevering voice and all. Sabi nga, the works. All stops are pulled to really impress the audience n "Hoy, this is good acting and you should correspondingly be properly impressed." To Nora's credit, she relies entirely on her instincts and this works as Elwood Perez has never been known as an actor's director and Nora naman is the kind of actress na even when she is left to her own resources, still manages to come up with an arresting performance, no matter how florid.


Sa kaso ng pagkakaganap ni Vilma as Juliet in "Pahiram," it is a credit not only to the actress but also the director. Vi's innate talent shines, pero alam mong malaki ang naitulong sa kanya ni Bernal to further hone it and polish it and make it truly oustanding in the totality of its effect. Makikita ito sa succession pa lang ng opening sequences. Nagsimula ang movie na masayang masaya ang tono nito, with Vi rambunctiously singing "Material Girl" sa kanilang Christmas Party, without a trace of the impending tragedy that she will face. Then she goes to the CR, starts to feel bad, and after that ay nalaman na niyang mgay cancer siya't may taning na ang buhay niya. Vi is not shown vehemently reacting to this. Instead, ipinakita lang siyang tahimik na naglalakad, her shoulders hunched na tila ba nasa mga balikat niya ang daigdig. She then attends this family reunion sa parents niya, which ends in disaster dahil inaway lang siya ng ate niyang si Dexter Doria. Wala pa ring reaction dito si Vi kahit nilait siya ng mga kamag-anak niya.


Sa susunod na scene, nagwawala ang anak niya si Billy Joe dahil lumayas ang yaya nito't ayaw nitong pumasok sa school. Vi goes to the kitchen to prepare breakfast at habang nagbabati siya ng itlog, doon pa lang ipinakitang una siyang nag-breakdown. And this is shown nang nakatalikod siya sa camera. No overtly ornate kind of emoting na akting na akting ang dating. Pero damang-dama mo pa rin (if you're a trully perceptive, sensitive viewer) ang mga emotions the character goes through dahil sa buildup nito. This is apparent in various other scenes in the film. Bale ba, ang estilo rito ni Vi ay hindi 'yung trying to ingratiate herself with the audience to please them, which she is went to do in the past. Dito, basta she becomes the part (lalo na sa eksena nila ni Gabbly Concepcion sa simbahan na binalikan nila kung paano sila nagkasira), and if you notice that she is good, well salamat po. Sa second viewing ng movie naming lalong napansin ang subtle nuances ng performance ni Vi, up to her death scene which confirms our supposition that the movie is not really so much about death than a celebration of life, what with all the panoramic shots showing the beauty of nature and the world around us, na enough reason for anyone to want to survive.

Vilma On The Go


Aminado si Vilma Santos na ang 1982 ay naging banner year para sa kanya. Bago pumasok ang taon ay napili siyang best actress sa Metro Manila Filmfest dahil sa pagkakaganap niya sa Karma. Kalahatian ng taon ay nahirang naman siyang Famas best actress para sa performance niya sa Pakawalan Mo Ako. At bago natapos ang taon ay nagwagi siya bilang unang best actress ng Let's Talk Movies for her body of work sa mga pelikulang Relasyon, Sinasamba Kita, Never Ever Say Goodbye, T-Bird at Ako at Gaano Kadalas Ang Minsan? And very recently, tinanghal din siyang box office actress of 1982 sa kauna-unahang Cinehan Awards na ipinamigay ng Metro Manila Theatres Association. Ito'y dahil sa katotohanang ang mga pelikula niyang Sinasamba Kita at Gaano Kadalas ang Minsan? ang siyang biggest blockbusters of the year.

Maulit kaya ang winning streak na ito ni Vi ngayong 1983? Isang matamis na ngiti ang agad na isinukli ni Vi sa aming tanong. "Sana," aniya. "Kung patuloy na susuportahan ng publiko ang mga pelikula ko." From all indications, hindi malayong maulit sa taong ito ang mga tagumpay na natamo niya noong kalilipas na taon. Katatapos lamang niya gawin sa Amerika ang Ayaw Kong Maging Kerida with erstwhile beau, Romeo Vasquez. Hindi matatawaran ang naging resulta sa takilya ng mga una nilang pagtatambal sa Nag-aapoy na Damdamin at Isang Pugad, Dalawang Ibon kaya't malamang na muling tangkilikin ng madla ang muli nilang pagpapareha. Sinimulan na niya ang shooting ng Broken Marriage para sa Regal at ng Paano Ba Ang Mangarap? para sa Viva. Dito, ang makakatambal naman niya ay ang perennial box-office mate niyang si Christopher de Leon. With such project in hand, how can she afford to lose? Then, there's the project Director Mike de Leon has planned for her. Hindi na ito ang Sister Stella L na tungkol sa isang rebeldeng madre.

Na-shelve na iyon dahil sa inaasahang magiging problema sa censors. Mike now wants her to do a romance-drama and we heard na baka sa bakuran din ng Viva gawin ang proyektong ito. Sa mga pelikulang nagawa niya recently at maging sa mga susunod pa niyang projects, nalilinya si Vi sa roles ng "the other woman." A lot of people says it's the kind of role she does best. Ano kaya ang opinyon tungkol dito? "Tutoong I've played the role of the other woman several times na," tugon niya. "But it's portrayed not in the usual way na nang-aagaw ako ng asawa kundi in a more sympathetic, understanding manner. Ang ikinatutuwa ko nga is the fact that the public has learned to accept me doing all sort of roles, like the mature roles na ginagawa ko ngayon. Even the sexy scences I did in some of my films. Kung hindi nila tinanggap ang transition ko from being a mere movie star to a serious actress tackling more demanding roles, I doubt very much kung nandito pa rin ako hanggang ngayon. They've been very kind to me and for that, it's only proper that I should be grateful." Kumusta naman ang current trip niya sa states? "Well, it was very fulfilling.

Talagang balak kong pumunta roon before the year ended para magbakasyon nga at tuloy dalawin ang mama ko at ang sister kong si Winnie. It so happened na nataon naman ang offer sa 'kin ni Atty. Laxa to do a movie there kaya't magkasamang pleasure at trabaho ang pagpunta ko roon." Bakit na-delay ang kanyang pag-uwi? "We're supposed to stay there sana talaga for fifteen days lang. Kaso mo, bumagyo naman habang nandoon kami. Imagine, ang tagal-tagal hindi bumabayo sa Los Angeles, tapos, nataon pang nandoon kami saka dumating ang ulan. So we had to stop shooting until the weather cleared up. In a way, talagang we took out time na rin. Nandoon na rin ako so I decided to spend Christmas with my mom. Matagal din kaming hindi nagkasama kaya missed na missed ko na silang talaga. Ang cute-cute ng second baby ni Winnie at buntis na na naman siya ngayon. Pangatlo na nila ni Bong! And they look very happy. Si Bong works at MacDonal's while Winnie stays at home and attends to their kids." Masayang-masaya raw ang kanyang pasko sa L.A. pero iisang bagay lamang ang talagang labis niyang ikinalungkot. At ito'y ang absence ng tanging anak niyang si Lucky sa kanyang tabi sa pagsapit ng kapaskuhan.

"Talagang-talagang hindi ko na ulit iiwan si Lucky kapag umalis uli ako," aniya. "Akala ko kasi, sandali lang kami. Pero inabot ng one month and one week. There were times na gusto kong biglang umuwi para makita lang siya. Kaya lang, kailangang tapusin ang commitments ko roon. And what made me worry less is the fact that Lucky is with his father. Alam kong hindi siya pababayaan ni Edu and he's in good hands. Pagkataon din naman npara magkasama silang mag-ama nang matagal-tagal. But the first thing I did pagdating ko rito e ipatawag agad siya." Kumusta naman ang mga kasama niya sa Ayaw Kong Maging Kerida? "Okey si Carmi (Martin). Masarap siyang kasama. Maging si Direk Leonardo Garcia. Ilang beses na rin naman kaming nagkasama sa pelikula. Walang hassles sa shooting. Even the Filipinos there were all very cooperative." And...how about Bobby Vasquez? Did sparks fly sa muli nilang pagkikita as some quarters predicted? Was there any talk about reconciliation? Napatawa agad si Vi as if she was expecting the question. "Bobby is an old friend," and take note sa emphasis niya sa salitang "friend." "We're happy to see each other again at wala kaming naging problema sa trabaho.

But everything is strictly work na lang. We did go out once as a group. We're caual friends na ngayon." Vi admits that Bobby is slimmer now and is even more attractive than before, pero isa na nga naman siyang taong may asawa't anak at ang priority na laging laman ng isip niya ay si Lucky. Malakas daw ang ugong na baka siya ang manalo sa Urian at Academy Awards dahil sa performance niya sa Relasyon. Ano ang reaksiyon niya rito? "Naku, ha," napapatawa niyang pahayag. "Ayoko nang ganyan. Mahirap ang umasa. I admit, matagal ko nang gustong manalo ng Urian and it's indeed a great honor to win sa Academy Awards dahil it's a recognition from your peers. Kung darating, okey lang. Pero ayokong umasa, mahirap masaktan, e. Basta all I can say is lalo kong pagbubutihin ang aking pag-arte sa mga pelikulang gagawin ko this year. "...I think mommy Cleo, as Ate Vi calls her, is in Los Angeles. I read an article that Mario Bautista wrote a few years ago that he attended a wedding in Los Angeles and Cleo Cruz was there. If I am not mistaken she still gets in touch with mommy Santos in Los Angeles. Cleo Cruz was married to the late brother of the movie scribe Chit Ramos. Cleo was the P.R.O. of Ate Vi in the 70’s and 80’s. I remember reading her column Vilma Variety in Bulaklak at Paru-Paro Magazine. The column for Ms. Aunor was written by Baby K. Jimenez. There was a time when Cleo Cruz and Baby K. Jimenez had a series of heated argument in their columns on who is the real queen of the Philippine movies. Sino ang makakalimot sa kanyang portion na may pamagat na "Say, Say, Say" sa nasabing programa na tuwing papatugtugin ito ay kinakalog niya ang ulo niya. Si Babette ay best friend ni German Moreno at noong nagkaroon sila ng hidwaan ay palaging sinasabi ni Babette na nagtitirik siya ng kandilang itim. Pero bago pumanaw si Babette ay nagkabati din sila ni Kuya Germs. Nasaan na kaya ang mga koleksiyones niya na "PH" ng mga artistang lalaki? Samantala, ang kontrobersiyal talent manager na si Alfie ay nagkaroon ng radio program sa DZBB na pinamagatang "What Is All About Alfie?" "...I am thinking, what could be more “kabastusan” than showing a funeral cortege as a PIP ( Picture in Picture) in a noontime game show, full of gyrating dancers and contestants jumping and up and down, audience cheering and clapping? What was ABS-CBN’s motivation to do this? I can only think of one reason; TV rating - hitting two birds with one stone, so that viewers need not switch channels. In short, you’re “entertained” by both events by a single channel. I am reminded of a light hearted statement made by the late movie reporter Babette Villaruel when asked about the funeral of his deceased father “ Okay naman ho. Successful naman yung burol niya”. "...Catch a flashback of an evening of confidences written for a column on Jan. 5, 1989. It was an interesting mix to start with. Babette Villaruel, Mama Monchang, Bong de Leon and Mar Cornes hugging a corner of that magnificent garden at Forbes Park. We have come a long way, baby, since that time we all enjoyed the highlights of Aling Maring's merienda at El Oro. But the elegant domain in this conclave of the rich is owned by banker Danny Dolor, a friend of Ronald Constantino, whose birthday was the reason for that evening of fun. It also turned out to be an evening of confidential declaration. June Torrejon, who has dropped Rufino from her name, was happy to note that her children will not have a half-brother or sister since Nena V. disclosed that during a religious confrontation, the real father came out in a confession while he was getting married to another one. If you find this had to follow, so do I. But the most incredible things happen in showbiz and this is one of those. "It was an answer from above," June said. "He knows how to take care of his children." The talk that night also centered on other separations, like that of Inday Badiday and Gene Palomo and as usual with such embellishment to make light of the situation...

...Vilma Santos, looking as stunningly beautiful as you see her on TV, sat at our table. Which turned the talk now to Edu Manzano and current love Maricel Soriano. Details were again embellished, some outrageously so just for fun. Maricel is a great cook, someone said looking at Vi, now the butt of all jokes. "Perhaps he left because you never cooked for him!" "But I don't know how to cook!" Vilma laughed. But I learned some recipes from my mother-in-law." Our table decided to form the Edu-Vilma movement with Edu's mom Mrs. Manzano as president and June as vice president. Vilma is their favorite but Vilma herself just flashed her Mona Lisa smile. Danny Dolor's home sits on top of a knoll this side of Forbes. It is one of those houses with an open façade, giving it a more welcoming atmosphere than the usual high walls. At our corner table, gossip was the main menu. June consulted her lawyer to sue a starlet saying nasty things in print about her when the starlet became close to Randy Rufino. Vilma was the only actress at our table of movie writers which included Bibsy Carballo, Romy Vitug, Ethel Ramos, Letty Celi, Nena V. , Ricky Lo, Nestor Cuartero and Babette. "Oh Vi, don't write about this, ha!" Now: March 26, 2010: Vilma is happily married to Ralph Recto who is running for the Senate. She is the very popular governor of Batangas. Her son with Edu, Lucky Manzano, is now a popular actor and TV host. Edu, who has moved on to other loves after Maricel, has become a popular TV host. He is running for vice president of the Philippines under the administration party. Babette Villaruel, Nena V. , Mar Cornes and Mama Monchang are dead. Alfie Lorenzo

"...Alfie interviewed Nora who professed her still lingering passion for Manny de Leon. Again it was duly reported by Alfie. Again he was belied, this time by Nora Aunor. This twin denials did not deter Alfie from pursuing a more rabid reporting stance. Now with the Vilma-Bobot group, he would rake coals and embers and fan the escalating Nora-Vilma war. Gradually the Nora-Vilma fight settled into a more subdued form of rivalry. From proing for movie stars, Alfie Lorenzo teamed up with the members of what would eventually be the Laperal Mafia and the Ligaya Brotherhood (or Sisterhood, whichever the case maybe) and went into proing for movie companies - Sine Pilipino, Juan de la Cruz, Lyra Ventures - moving into Regal where he is more or less a fixture. Before latching on to these companies, Alfie and Douglas ventured into movie production coordinating for a freelance producer and came up with forgettable movie called, "Wild, Wild Pussycat." "Lahat kaming malas nagsama-sama sa Sine Pilipino. Elwood directed "Blue Boy," flop. Joey directed for Tower, flop, buti na lang kumuwela si Vilma." remembers Alfie. At Sine Pilipino, Vilma Santos finally made the big leap to superstardom then held solely by the dark girl from Iriga. With a couple of hits which raked in the box-office, Sine Pilipino was able to establish the careers of Joey Gosiengfiao, Elwood Perez, and even when Sine Pilipino went under because of what has been reported as faulty management, Alfie managed to breast the waves of bankruptcy and the board of censors' ire to stay in business as a movie writer-pro-columnist-manager. At Lyra Ventures, Alfie was part of the project-makers of "Uhaw" parts I and II, the scenes of which caused a turnover in the board of censors. Today, Alfie Lorenzo's cheek and guts have taken him around the world in pursuit of his own star. Sa mga Liberty Boys, tanging si Lito lang nagkaroon ng acting award. Siya ang best supporting actor ng Urian noong 1988 para sa pelikulang Kapag Napagod Ang Puso. Noong huling bahagi ng dekada '80 na nauso ang mga musical variety show katulad ng The Sharon Cuneta Show ni Sharon Cuneta, Maria Maria ni Maricel Soriano, Always Snooky ni Snooky Serna, Loveliness ni Alma Moreno, Superstar ni Nora Aunor, Tonight with Dick & Carmi nina Roderick Paulate at Carmi Martin at Vilma ni Vilma Santos ay naging PRO si Alfie ng Loveliness. Nang mga panahong ito ay galit na galit si Alfie sa executive producer ng Vilma Show na si Chit Guerrero. Pati si Vilma ay nadadamay sa mga galit niya kay Chit. Talagang personal na ang banat niya kay Vilma. Posible kayang ang dahilan ng galit niya eh dahil hindi man lang makaangat ang Loveliness sa Vilma Show sa dami ng commercials, production numbers, guests at higit sa lahat ay rating? Ang Vilma Show ay palaging numero uno, walang makaabante maging ang sinasabi nilang longest-running musical variety show na Superstar. "...Ricardo F. Lo, more popularly known as Ricky Lo, is an entertainment writer, showbiz commentator from the Philippines. He is of Chinese descent. He was born on April 21. He is a native of Las Navas, Northern Samar, where he finished grade school. He finished high school at the bilingual Tabaco Pei Ching School in Tabaco, Albay, and took up AB English at the University of the East. From 1969 to 1972, Ricky worked as editorial assistant of Variety magazine, the Sunday supplement of the old Manila Times where he started his Funfare column. After this, he joined the Philippine Daily Express first as staff writer of its Express Week magazine and then as deskman of The Evening Express and eventually its main broadsheet. He later went on to work as editorial assistant for its Sunday magazine, Weekend, until 1986. Mario Bautista

"...I started my professional career in Channel 5, the carrier station of the Manila Times, in 1965. I was with the film programming department. We got to screen old movies, both local and foreign before it was aired on shows like "Million Dollar Movies", "Sinagtala" and "Bahaghari". I also helped in the production of some TV shows, like "Magmahal ay Langit", then directed by Celso Ad. Castillo, and "Pamilya Kontra-Partido", a sitcom. The station was closed down by martial law in September of 1972. During that time, I was already the head of the film programming department. In 1976, I was invited to write film reviews for "TV Guide", edited by Rod Reyes. I was invited to be a member of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino that gave out the Urian Awards. Newspapers then invited me to write entertainment columns and reviews for them, including "People's Tonite", "People's Journal", "Times Journal", and "The Philippines' Daily Express". THE TEN BEST FILMS OF VILMA SANTOS (Videos)

Sa history ng pelikulang lokal, sadyang namumukod-tangi si VILMA SANTOS dahil hindi lang sa larangan ng pag-arte siya nagtagumpay kundi pati na rin sa pulitika. Pagkatapos ng siyam na taong paglilingkod bilang mayor ng Lipa City, tinanghal naman siyang governor ng buong lalawigan ng Batangas. Nagsimula si Ate Vi bilang child actress noong 1963 sa pelikulang Tudis Liit ng Sampaguita Pictures nang siya ay siyam na taong gulang lamang. Noong naging 16 years old si Ate Vi in 1970, she became a teen idol and made a staggering total of 27 movies for one year alone. HINDI MADALING GAWIN - Ang assignment namin dito ay itala ang ten best films na nagawa ni Ate Vi at, sa totoo lang, hindi madaling gawin ito dahil nga napakarami niyang nagawang magagandang pelikula through the years. (adapted from Lualhati Bautista’s award-winning novel, she played a liberal single mother who asserts herself, directed by Chito Roño) and Dekada ’70 (again adapted from a Lualhati Bautista novel and directed by Chito Roño, tungkol ito sa isang ina noong panahon ng martial law). Our personal choices - Para sa amin, ang aming personal choices are the following:

1. SISTER STELLA L (1984) - Mula kay Mother Lily Monteverde ng Regal Films, ito ang most socially relevant film na ginawa ni Ate Vi, masterfully directed by Mike de Leon, written by Ricky Lee. Hinakot nito ang karamihan sa tropeo ng Urian Awards for that year, including best picture, best actress for Ate Vi, best actor for Jay Ilagan, best supporting actress for Laurice Guillen, and best supporting actor for Tony Santos, Sr. Si Vilma ang gumaganap bilang title-roler, isang apolitical nun na ang dating boyfirend ay naging isang journalist (Jay) na tumutulong sa mga inaaping manggagawa sa pangunguna ng labor leader na si Ka Dencio (Tony). Kalong daw, front din. Alam mo namang kulang-kulang ako. ‘Pag wala ka, magkakalat ako. Para akong manok, takbo nang takbo, wala namang ulo!”

3. DALAWANG PUGAD, ISANG IBON (1977) - A commercial and artistic success written and directed by Ishmael Bernal, love triangle movie rin ito that banked on the real life romance then of its lead stars, Vilma and Romeo Vasquez. Si Vilma ay si Terry, na iniwanan ng kanyang immature boyfriend (Mat Ranillo III at sumama sa isang lalaking may asawa (Romeo) sa kabila ng pagtutol ng mga magulang niya. Ang relasyon nina Vilma at Romeo ay reflected sa relasyon ng iba pang mga tauhan sa movie, tulad ng sa mother ni Vilma (Anita Linda) at ng ama niyang nagtataksil din (Fred Montilla), sa lola ni Vi (Mary Walter),sa first boyfriend niya (Mat) at sa babaeng may gusto rito (Ann Villegas) at kapatid nitong pokpok (Laila Dee), at sa misis ni Romeo (Anna Gonzales) na ayaw siyang pakawalan kahit hindi naman sila magkasundo. RELASYON (1982) - Ito ay isa pang pelikula ni Ishmael Bernal sa Regal Films na tumatalakay sa subject ng adultery from the point of view of the other woman, si Marilou (Vilma), ang mistress ni Christopher de Leon na pinaglilingkuran siya ng buong puso: pinaglalaba siya, binibigyan ng beer at inaalagan pa ang anak niya mula sa legal wife niya. Ipinakita rin sa feministic movie na aito ang pagka-chauvinist ng mga lalaking Pinoy. Gusto’y sila lagi ang masusunod at ni ayaw makakausap ng ibang lalaki ang babae nila, tulad ng aversion ni Christopher kay Jimi Melendez sa kuwento, at pati na rin sa kaibigang bading ni Ate Vi na si Manny Castañeda. DOLZURA CORTEZ STORY: DAHIL MAHAL KITA (1993) - Ito ang unang pelikulang lokal na nagsiwalat tungkol sa sakit na AIDS at filmbio ito ng kuna-unahang Pilipino na umaming may AIDS siya, si olzura Cortez, na ang kuwento ay nalathala sa dyaryo. Sinulat ni Ricky Lee, dinirek ni Laurice Guillen at produced ng Octo Arts Films, bida-kontrabida rin ang papel ni Ate Vi rito in the title role.
